Choosing a point-of-sale system: ten questions before you sign

A checklist for owners comparing software, whoever you end up buying from.

Software demos are designed to look good. These questions are designed to find out what happens on a bad day.

  • What works with no internet, and what does not?
  • Who can see which numbers? Can I limit what a cashier sees?
  • How is stock held: one number per product, or by delivery with expiry and cost?
  • Which payment methods and tax integrations work today, and which are planned?
  • Can I export all my data, in a usable format, if I leave?
  • Who do I call when it breaks at 8pm on a Friday, and do they answer?
  • What does set-up include? Who loads my menu or products?
  • What does it cost in year two, not just year one?
  • Can you show me a customer like me, and can I speak to them?
  • What is not finished yet?

The last question matters most. Everyone has a roadmap. The honest vendors tell you which parts of it are still on the roadmap.
